What is Acne?

Acne is a skin condition commonly found in young people which manifests itself in prolific spots on the face, shoulders and back.

What Causes Acne?

There is no one cause of acne. There are several factors that will determine if you are likely to get acne and you would need to be suffering from at least 4 of these. Hormones play a large role in the problems of acne sufferers and due to an imbalance, your body overproduces oil (sebum), which clogs the pores and then infection sets in. This infection shows on your skin as a blackhead etc.

If your body can not cope with the level of toxic waste the liver and bowel will expel the waste through your lungs or in acne sufferer’s case, the skin. Closely associated with toxins, nutritional deficiencies not only affect the efficiency of the waste system in our bodies, but also lower the levels of energy the body needs to fight disease.

One of the most important factors which will determine whether we will suffer from acne is our genetic tendencies – did our parents have acne? There are other issues such as stress and lack of sleep, which although not direct causes of acne, will affect our bodies’ ability to process effectively which will then affect our immune and waste systems.

Who Gets Acne?

It is commonly found in teenagers due to their high levels of hormone activity, however, it can continue into your twenties and some very unfortunate people can live with it until their thirties or forties.

What are the Symptoms of Acne?

The physical symptoms are:-

  • Blackheads
  • Whiteheads
  • Nodules
  • Pustules
  • Pimples
  • Cysts
  • Dry and pink skin
  • Itchy skin
  • Scarring

However, there are the emotional symptoms to cope with as well. Many people with acne suffer from low self esteem, lack of confidence, shyness, they find it hard to talk to strangers and avoid situations where they may need to be noticed.

Is Acne Infectious?

No! You cannot catch it from someone else.

Do Chocolate and Chips Make Acne Worse?

Fatty foods do not directly cause acne nor make it worse. However, it is important to reduce the toxins in your body and eat healthily so that your body works efficiently.

Does Stress Cause Acne?

It does appear that there is a link between stress and acne. During times of stress, hormones may become unbalanced which affects the production of sebum which consequently exacerbates the acne.

What Can Make Acne Worse?

Do not scrub your face. It has been proven that using harsh soaps and abrasive products on your skin can worsen your acne.

Eating a poor diet will affect your acne. The more toxins that you put into your body, the harder it has to work to expel them and if they can not be expelled through the liver and bowel, then the lungs and skin suffers.

Not enough sleep may make your acne worse. A good night’s sleep helps maintain a healthy well rested body which in turn builds a strong immune system.

Stress definitely aggravates your acne. If you are stressed, your body produces more hormones which trigger the sweat glands in your face to produce more oil. The oil blocks your pores causing infection resulting in pustules.

Some cosmetics and hair products contain sebum which obviously will make acne worse as sebum oil will clog your pores. Even oil free cosmetics may contain a synthetic alternative which will do the same job as sebum.

Squeezing your spots can force the infection deeper into your skin.

Are Acne Suffers Healthy?

Generally speaking, acne suffers are healthy. Surprised? If you suffer from acne, you are very conscious of your body and what goes into it. One of the factors affecting acne is your diet and the amount of toxic waste, therefore, people with acne will generally ensure that they are eating a healthy, balanced diet in order to minimise any negative effects routing from food.

Why Do I Get Acne But My Friends Don’t?

There are several reasons why some people get acne and others don’t.  We all deal with the food that we take in differently. Two people that eat the same diet, one may store fat which results in them being overweight, whilst the other expels the toxins through their skin, causing acne. People hit puberty at different times. One person may be genetically less or more prone to acne.  There are many ways in which the body deals with toxins, not all of them visible outwardly.

How is Acne Treated?

There are many treatments on the market all of which treat the symptoms and not the cause. Even the prescribing of antibiotics only treats the bacteria in the acne not the acne itself. Many of the creams and lotions available help to dry the skin or reduce inflammation and although they may provide temporary relief, some may aggravate the acne which can cause a renewed, more aggressive bout of acne. Be careful of side effects with these chemical treatments.

Can I Squeeze My Spots?

Most dermatologists will tell you not to squeeze spots, and they do so with good reason. The process of squeezing can force the infection deeper into your skin causing additional ,inflammation and possible scarring. However, if you absolutely have to there is some good advice to follow to minimise the spread of infection:

  • Take a warm bath or shower to soften your skin
  • Wash your face and remove all makeup
  • Was you hands to prevent  spreading germs and infecting the pimple
  • Sterilize a needle
  • Gently prick the tip of the pimple with the needle
  • Wrap a clean tissue around your index fingers
  • Gently apply pressure to the sides of the pimple to ease out the pus. Stop when blood or pus comes out!

Does Acne Go Away As I Get Older?

Yes, generally acne will disappear around your mid twenties. It is possible for it to stubbornly linger into your thirties and a few cases, forties, but normally, once your hormones have settled, the acne settles too.
